    • Personally...I don't so much like the joke. I work in a kids' psych unit so I've been the (un)lucky recipient of this email about 50 times by people who write "I thought of you..." (LOL!)...It just plays off the stereotypes out there-kind of amusing but overall a reminder of those stereotypes and how hard they are for real people.

Suprisingly, I found the dialogue after the "joke" really interesting...it's a tough call wha'ts funny and what's not. Of course, if mods went around deleting whatever they or the vast majority thought was NOT funny-we probably wouldn't have much left. This "joke" got us talking and I think that's a good thing.

    • The joke is not offensive, It's cute but I've heard it before. I have a physical Illness, My wife(RIP) was Bi-Polar (Manic Depressive, same thing) we were together 21years and she even made jokes about herself, her mood swings and episode, which in real life are no fun to experience.

When she was young she was put in a Convant in San Fransisco. When I was 7, I was put in a State Hospital in Traverse City, Michigan. This place was built in 1865.

I don't mind jokes like this, If I did I just wouldn't read them.

I just don't appreciate people looking down on someone with an Illness or Disability.

    • Right on, brother!  You have hit the nail on the head?  I go to the clinics here in LV, the gov't kind, and they look at me like I am on drugs.  OBVIOUSLY from the doctor's and staff's "behavior" towards the sick, elderly, infirm, and those who do not feel safe or protected while in their presence, we are nothing more than cowards, low-lifes, maggots, and other low-life's who have never made anything out of their lives, and who have been, and will continue to, suck dry Uncle Sam's teat.  Yes, folks.  Its true.  None of us are sick.  We are taking our medications home and flushing them down the toilet, after making our co-payments, so we can collect our $117 a month (just like that brain-damaged soldier with the one eye we all saw on TV this year at Walter Reed does (a fact!, he only gets $117 per month.  AMERICA LOVES THEIR HEROES!  HOO-HOO!), food stamps, subsidized housing, SSI/SDI !!  We have no family's who love us, we've never worked a day in our lives, we've never produced anything, and OBVIOUSLY not a one of us has ever graduated from pre-school!  Who behaves like this to "us" veterans (I am on the disabled veteran board)?  The doctors, NURSES AND OFFICE STAFF at the East Las Vegas VA Clinic.  The patient's advocate won't even return phone calls.  They don't even answer their internal and external telephone calls.  They make diagnoses, BEFORE they give you a test, and they don't even know who you are, when you come in for an appointment.  They never read your record before you walked in the door.  The nurse at the East clinic even told me that if I didn't like it, I should go to the Air Force Hospital at Nellis AFB.  I have been semi-conscious for the last 3 years.  Read my profile and blogs.  My neurologist crapped on me so much on my first appointment, about who I was, where I live and the apparent lack of education and status in life that I have, apparent by his and their behavior towards me and others, that I told the front desk clerk on my second visit that if I could not have a companion for my visit with the doctor, that I didn't plan on coming back.  Of course, none was provided.  I was told to go elsewhere.  The female clerk who checked me out wanted to know, "If she should schedule my next appointment?"  I called the patient advicate to complain, left a message on her voice-mail and never have heard back from her.  Prior to that, my complaints elsewhere, resulted in my having a procedures done by another physician at that clinic, but not my being removed from his caseload and given to another.  It appears that the VA Bill of Patient's Rights means nothing to the East Clinic Director or his staff!  SCREW ALL VETERANS!  We are nothing more than a bunch of cowards who never made it through the first few days of training, and now we got free medical care and a million dollar a year pension (yeah, right), all paid for by the hard working folks of the USA.  (I've been feeling better this week, see my blogs.)

I'm presently in the system, making appointments to make appointment to make appointment to make appointments.  Last week, I called in sick, so I could by-pass that system and allow my blood-work-ups from the cancer clinic to make it back to my fine neurologist, before I did, so I wouldn't have to go through the merry-go-round, again.

I walked into the emergency room, mistakenly believing they would take care of me, 3 calendar years ago, with an 11 month case of pneumonia.  I live 325 miles away.  What to do?  I stayed here in a flea-bag apt complex while  I made payments on my home, back home, that I wasn't living in, so I could drain every penny out of my sorry-ass, to stay here in Vegas making appointments to make appointments to make appointments.

3 years later, I am still making appointments, although I am now feeling better.  Think anger might be my cure?  Nope.  The East Clinic VA already told me what to do.  GO SOMEWHERE ELSE IF I DON'T LIKE IT!

Yuppers, I LOVE AMERICA!   Thank you for my wonderful sorry-ass life and my million-dollar a year pension for only serving 3 days in the military, and then getting out, because I could not hack it!

Yup, we can all laugh at each other.  And, yup, don't make me feel small.  Yup, I'm back on top, now.  More harder then two female Marine Corps menstruating MP's, with machine guns and PMS!

So, how can I tell my story to ABC, and shut these fokkers (planes from WWII) down, at the East clinic of the VA in Las Vegas.  I got no problem now.  My mind is clearer and clearer.  I should really stop whining, and take it like a man!

Afterall, who cares?  Not me anymore.

Maybe I should start reloading, again, huh?  HeHe!  Just kidding!

HaHa!  Look at that poor bastard!  I'm sure glad I didn't have to go off to war!  LOSER!

Are you talking about this thread or replying to something else? It's late so maybe I'm confused but this totally makes no sense to me!

    •  Just like with most everything it is a matter of opinion. I certainly don't think i was meant to be  mean. But some people find some things funny, while others don't, just a matter of opinion. Do I think it is funny? Yes, but that's just my opinion. Cool

Been hospitalized for depression when they said I was "mentally ill" and didn't have MS. I have MS and do suffer from clinical depression, at times. I thought this was funny. I try not to take things too seriously.

    • I've seen before what Justin wrote.  I guess it depends on if you can relate and whether it's something personal. I guess I really can't say because I've never experienced anything like that. But I can see both sides of it completely.

    •  I thought it was a funny joke.  My husband is bipolar and thought it was a hoot.  I didn't realize we could put jokes on Disaboom.

    • My name is Josh.  I have "OCD with phobic reaction" and "Mood disorder with mixed elements of anxiety and depression", both secondary to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), with a premorbid diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (prior to my TBI)...........................................and I have to say that I found this post hilarious.  Just like I find jokes about white people funny (i'm white), jokes about  black people, women, men, gay, straight, hispanic, redneck, etc.  You know if one can step back and see the humor in the large diversity of individuals within our society, and the humor that accompanies whatever individual we are within the world, I think the world would be a lot more peaceful.  Just one man's thoughts.  thanks for the interesting conversation.

dragging this message on, If i were to find this post offensive then I would have to find movies such as "50 First Dates", starring Adam Sandler, as well.  In that movie the make fun of people with brain injury (not in a malicious way), there's the "10 second memory" guy suffering from a memory disorder in the movie.  I have memory problems secondary to my TBI, albeit not that bad comparatively, but I still found it funny.  My family, and I join in sometimes, makes fun on my anxiety spasms (for lack of a better word) and I find it funny.  I guess to each his or her own.  I think sometimes that a possible predicter of whether someone is more apt to get offended in these situations could be seen in the degree, or lack there of, that the individual has forgiven his or herself for being less than perfect, for being disabled.  The degree, or lack there of, that an individual has let go of the anger over why they were given the cards they were dealt.  And finally, pertaining more broadly to all humor referring to a specific group of people, I think that the intent behind a joke is often obvious ie. whether it is meant maliciously or solely for the sake of humor and reminding us not to take ourselves or others, in all our differences and similarities, too seriously.  We are all human, animals, and most definitely worth the respect and dignity that theoretically, with perhaps minor acception, all life deserves.  Ok.  Stick a fork in me.  I'm done. Stick out tongue Big Smile

    • Josh.........is there something else you'd like to tell us ?  I think that most of the time, a person is offended because they want to be.
