I just found out that my uncle has this. I'm worried because there is a genetic risk. Okay I know this is going to sound selfish but I already have most of that stuff from my CP. How big of risk factor is that? Can you be tested for it, like now in my 20's. I think my uncle is going to be ok, but I am keeping my old scooter handy. I feel like I shouldn't worry about it yet I am.
Okay, I have seen this post for several days, with no answer, so I will be the one who is actually pretty dumb here and say, "I don't know what you are asking?" What are you 'edgy' about? What does your uncle have that might also have a genetic factor, but which might also be showing up with your CP? I am sorry, but I would like to help out here, and I have to say that I am finding the way you are asking your question just a bit confusing. Perhaps if you ask again, you will get a better answer than you have so far. A thought, anyway. Good luck. From 'The Dumb One.' Bonnie
Have to agree with Bonnie just a little unsure what your trying to ask. I can answer one question for you and there's no "Real" test to see If one has PD, just a series of task one does for a doctor to see If you fit Into any catagory that can lead them to believe one might have PD, There's so many other Illnesses that Mimick PD and the Doctors have a hard time trying to determing If one has PD or one of the other illnesses that could mimick PD. There are Blood test and a MRI might show something but as most Illnesses sometimes It can be something else!!!

Has what?
And I wondered what I was missing here.
I believe Buckeye Is saying her Uncle has PD (Parkinson's Disease)

Really? Where do you see that?
Right at the top just below where you see community!!!!
I agree, she's asking about Parkinson's Disease, since she posted her question in the PD sub-forum. May I also be so bold as to say she's concerned about developing PD since it can be genetic, and her uncle was diagnoised with it as well. Seems she also has CP (Cerebral Palsy) and many of the symptoms for both are simular, and is concerned that if she has PD, they won't be able to diagnoise it properly, hence she won't get proper care for PD... the doctors are too busy saying it's from her CP.
Is that about the gist of it?
Buckeye, my best advice is to not sweat it. Why borrow trouble? It's like me worrying myself into a panic attack because Diabetes runs rampant in my family.... yeah, I'll probably develope it in later life, my father and grandfather, as well as my oldest brother has/had diabetes, but I'm not going to chew my nails to the nailbed for something that MAY or MAY NOT happen. RELAX!!! Honey, life is too short to freak out about it. Find some focus in doing something you like.
I'm usually up on my PD, I thought I heard something on the news not long ago about genetics but thought some other disease. Have to agree with Shimas "Don't read into" the disease, there's little tell tail signs that will show there head, mine was my hand floppping around like a paint shaker on high. Each person Is different each case Is different, no 2 case are or will be the same, some will progress faster or more rapid then others while some may take years to show any trace of something wrong.
Reading up only puts you where you want the disease to be, my sister taught me that and she's a RN. Reading will make you 2nd guess yourself and your Illness, I refrain as much as possible I just pass what I know to my sister and she does research and tells me later after things have already started!!!!
This is posted in the Parkinsons section so I am guessing that is the condition you mean. It's hard here to figure out where things are posted sometimes.
There is a small genetic risk in Parkinsons. Most people who have Parkinsons have no family history but there are some families it "runs in." Especially there seems to be a genetic link in people who get Parkinsons at a younger age than usual.
There isn't yet a genetic test for Parkinsons. Diagnosis is made with a good physical exam by a neurologist who has experience with Parkinsons.
There is less of an overlap between Parkinsons Disease symptoms and Cerebral Palsy symptoms than we might think. Most people with CP have spasticity, which is resistance to a joint being stretched by another person that gets worse the faster it is moved .Most people with PD have rigidity which is resistance to a joint being moved even slowly. Tremors are very common in PD and less common in CP. For those with CP who walk, the way people with PD tend to walk is very different than the way people with CP tend to walk.
So if you find yourself developing new symptoms it is probably a good idea to see a neurologist and get checked out. Otherwise your risk is low especially at your age and the genetic risk is pretty small. There may someday be a gene test for the genetic forms but it doesn't seem to be avaialble yet.

Same for me. Having started trying to get this question answered, I hope that some information has helped.
I couldn't have said It better Night and I have PD, shame on me!!!! The best thing you can do Is see a nero and talk to him, One of the 1st things he'll do If they haven't asked you on the forms to fill out is ask about your Familt history, This gives Him/ her a ballpark to use as a guide to see if your within the relm of other family members who may also have the disease. The 2nd thing he/ she will do Is have you draw, this lets him see if you have a restful tremour or other. He'll also test your Mobility/ dexterity by checking arms, legs, hands, feet and head by pressing against and pulling each with you doing all the work, he/she is just checking your resistance and "feels" for any sign of tremour. And he/she will ask you to walk,(if you can) away and towards him regular like we all do and on your toes and your heals, he/she may say that you can use the wall for balance which i have to when it reguires balance. I was 38 when diagnosed and It's been 6 years now since, I don't dweel on It and just go day by day cus each day can and will be differnt. I have had very good days and some that have left me stuck in bed for hours. I've also noticed cold, damp days are my worst, this is something I've been forgetting to ask my doc, maybe next visit!!!
Good luck and please keep us posted, you got a friend here and In PA!!!!!!!
