what does it feel like when you first get your new prosthesis.. not emotionally but physically. does it hurt alo?! how do you know if the fit is right? i know right now with having my leg wrapped post-op it itches and feels tight for a reason. does the prosthesis feel tight and itchy?

I am currently on my 4th prosthetic in as many months and I have to say that I think they finally got it right. The problem is that your limb will continue to change for some time and the first one may not fit properly, but don't give up hope and DON'T settle for something that causes you pain. Everyone told me that once you get the right fit, you will be able to do anything and everything you want. I was sceptical of that as I went through so many bad fits, but now that I have this one, I'm glad I had a prosthesitist that was willing to keep working with me until I was happy. I've only had this one for 5 days and I can't believe the difference that it has made.

I went a while between my amputation and getting my prosthesis, so I can't tell you about that. Your prosthetist will help you get the right fit by having you add or remove socks as you need them. Your stump takes two years to "mature" and will be changing a lot. With some people, the volume in your stump can also change several times in a day. Adding or removing socks as needed will help with this. I don't have that problem really and get by with the same number of socks each day. You want a good fit, not necessarily a tight fit. To know if it's a good fit, you will have to experiment with the socks. It may take time, but you will get used to it.

its only been 2 weeks since amputation and i've already seen alot of changes. the swelling has gone down so much and i get the stiches out tomorrow. i think the itching means that its healing but between the nerve pain and itching i have some real bad days. But, the crying is due to the emotional part to all this. I try to only let in alittle bit of the trauma at a time. i mean i try to push away most of the emotions, i think if thats all i think about i would probably end up in the mental in=patient ward of the hospital.
