My name is Katie and my Uncle is 55 years old and has been in a wheelchair since he was 8 years old. Recently, it has come that he can't live on his own any more. He is legally blind and is getting weaker as time goes on. Our problem is that we can't find any housing that caters to people that are in wheel chairs and that are blind. We have found housing but most of it is for people that are mentally challenged and he does not fall in that catagory. He lives in the Philadelphia area.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This company helps with in home care, they are close to your area and might be able to point you in a direction that will help your uncle.
Sincerely,
Logan
An overview of our home care services is available here. A longer list of our caregiver services is available as well.
Thank you.
The problem is, he is not a Senior. Do you think they would still be able to help?
Katie
I only know if it through reputation but have you considered Inglis House? All their residents are wheelchair users and I believe they are comfortable with additonal disabilties as well.
Hello,
Housing issues for people with disabilities can be very challenging. Unfortunately there is not a quick fix/answer. In Philadelphia there is a very good Independent Living Center. Without making any guarantees that they will be successful, below is a link to that organization. Please let us know how things turn out.
Good luck, T.K. Small

I emailed the senior helpers and they said they would absolutely help your uncle.
I hope that helps.

Thank you so much!! I will give them a call.
Hi Katie, Afraid I can't help with the problem. I live in the Newark, De. area. My husband and I are both handicapped and looking for housing alternatives. We help each other as much as we can but are going downhill quickly. In 2 months, we will be picking out our cardboard box for the fall. Yes, many waiting lists here. Unless we want to go into an assisted living unit, we are up the creek. They are awful. Resemble a prison. Have you ever seen the movie, One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest? Similar. This new President, whomever it turns out to be, needs to be sensitive to the needs of special groups such as people with disabilities. Can't happen soon enough. !
