    • Just wondering if others on here sometimes battle with insomnia. I know mine has to do with a tad of anxiety as although i was approved by SSDI and i'm grateful that the Gov will help but i have worked all my life since i was 17 in 1981 when i joined the Navy and now it's going on 5 months since i last worked and i just sit home all the time and i think this is starting to bother me.

I am thinking of moving back out to Florida so i can at least sit out at the beaches to get some air and sunshine and try to meet people as i'm getting so bored and lonely now. Anyway until i relocate out of here (Albuquerque) does anyone have any thoughts ?? Take any sleep aides like Tylenol P.M as sometimes i average an hour or 2 of sleep at night.. I did for the first time today (since dec) ride the exercise bike as i have always thrived on exercise and activity as this may help me in the coming days/weeks as i have get out of this rut.

      Thankyou !! BeachGoer .....

    •  Hi Beachgoer

From another Beach goer...come to Cocoa Beach!

I've lived here almost 40 years and just love the community! We are out of the mainstream of south Florida and as an added attraction...you get to see lotsa of rocket launches from the Cape. I'm retired from NASA and my oldest son is now in the NAVY

    • Getting outdoors and having some good 'ol sun shine could probably do you a lot of good. You're doing a good thing by getting back into exercising, if you can get your body tired, your mind will soon follow. Hang in there, summer is coming and with summer comes renewed energy (mostly from the sun, especially over here in the rainy NW). Also pay attention what you eat, sugar and caffeine late in the day (after 1pm or so) can adversely affect your mood and/or sleeping ability. I've fought depression and anxiety my whole life and these things defiantly make a huge difference in my ability to cope and change my mood. Have you tried meditation techniques? Sometimes closing my eyes and taking deep breaths, listening to my breath go in and out and my heart beating, is just enough to calm me down long enough to fall asleep, this helps greatly when your pulse is raised to 102 resting, as mine often is.  Things like yoga can also help. Moving to a sunnier local, is not a bad idea at all, but be careful not to think it’s going to be a piece of cake or instantly make things better, you may have to leave behind things you’ll soon realize you miss (friends, loved ones, a favorite place or thing) these all can make these changes sometimes harder than they are worth. Think it over and weigh the benefits.

    • Thanks for the offer to move to Cocoa beach as i have looked into the Melbourne area as i've noticed in the newspaper classifieds it didn't look too expensive although you'd be the expert there Joe.

I was stationed at Mayport Naval Base from 1981 - 1985 then got out and stayed in Jax until 1995 so i know Jax very well. However it's very expensive to live by the beaches and i'd probably have to drive 10 to 15 miles each way from my apt to the ocean as with gas now over 3.60 a gal and climbing and on a limited income it might be tough so i'm looking at smaller communities that are close on the water like Melbourne, Panama City or Ft.Myers as some examples if i do head back.

      Take care !!

    • Thanks for your thoughts Tachie !! Your so correct on the diet as i've really let it go to heck so i'm back at eating well and exercising again as that does really help . I'll look into meditation as i used to stretch in past years as i've forgotten that it seemed to help also.

As for leaving i hear ya as i reconize there probably isn't a utopia out there but all my family have sinced left Albuquerque and isn't it amazing how friends disappear when you have a disease and can't get around much and are no longer working so not much to miss if i leave.

I guess i just figure that since at this juncture i'm alone and just sit  in my apt or go to the park and sit under a tree i would feel much better to get out on the beaches and water and intermingle with other beach goers possibly. Anyway i'm so glad i found this forum as it's good to interact with others in simular circunstances so again thanks so much Tachie !!!!

Hey no problem! I definatly understand the need to get out and the need for social interaction. The depression for me can be extremely dehabilitating. Have you tried acupuncture? Also something that helps me, i'm a fan of anything that keeps me off too many mood/mind altering medications! I prefer to find ways of self-medication/ mind control over myself. Through the years (almost 12 years now) I've learned to channel my depressive energy out and force myself to think in a more healthy light, but this becomes very difficult when isolated.

       Have you tried acupuncture?

No not for my current insomnia/anxiety issues but i'ved looked into it in the past for my autoimmune and most want 60 to 70 dollars a treatment at around 10 treatments and right now that really would be tough as i'm not working and living off my savings and credit cards until august when i start to recieve SSDI.

I guess for me it's so unnormal to not be working and socialising with co workers and customers etc as again i'vebeen working since 1981 and rarely have not worked thru out the years and now just sitting home all the time as now for 5 months as this really is starting to bother me. I'm just too young and energetic to be just home all day although i'm very grateful for the internet and sites like this one and others as that helps to keep my mind occupied. Sometimes i'll read Wikipedia for hours about History like the Roman Empire or other things of interest.

Anyway was just curious what others on here who have dealt with these issues before have done and thanks again Tachie !!!!

    • Hi, I'm Chrisite. I do have a lot of trouble sleeping. I will either have problems going to sleep or staying asleep. Usually sleep for 2 or 3 hours then wake up for a while and sleep again for a little bit. It's like that over and over all night long. Sometimes , I do take a tylenol PM . But I try not to take them much. A friend of mine suggested looking into something natural to take to make me sleep, I haven't done it yet . But if you do and you on other meds make sure there is no chance of a reaction with you meds. Good luck. I wish me and you both could get a good nights sleep.

    • Right on about Melbourne Joe.....and the P3's as i remember them are the planes with the radar disk on top of them. Although decommissioned now i was on the USS Sampson DDG-10 a guided missle destroyer as we got to go all around to places like Europe and Karachi, Pakistan but my favorate place was St.Croix Virgin Islands.

    • Hi Christie and thanks for your response. I'm sorry that you are suffering Insomnia like me as i've been having this off and on over the last several months as i'm just starting to get down about not working anymore and intermingling with co workers and friends i once knew.

How long have you've been having this and do you cycle the sleep aides?? Well just remember that if you can't sleep that there are others like us so although i would never wish this on anyone it helps to know your not the only one dealing with this if you catch my drift.

      Take care !!!

    • I have anxiety that would keep me up all night if I didn't take Temazepam.  It seems to also help my general anxiety.

    • I don't battle with insomnia anymore.

I simply stay up during night hours, sometimes doing a picture, recently talking with a friend on the computer, or sometimes watching some episodes of my favorite show. Whatever keeps the anxiety away.

The pain in my crappy leg won't let me sleep too long anyway, and I catch those few hours here and there during daytime, when the ghosties and beasties are gone.

    • Hi All, Since this is my domain if I am to single out one health issue, I can claim some expertise. I would say if you can manage the anxiety without meds you are lucky.  To those who are on benzo's and or psychotropics most of them don't work well no matter what doctors say. A responsible doctor is not going to consider placing a patient on benzo's without alot of thought unless there is really no alternative. I would say the first time you get strung out from the addiction which is big risk especially with benzo's and go through a withdrawal you will appreciate what I am saying. You can easily count the people who have sucessfully gotten off these drugs on one hand if you talk to people unfortunate enough to suffer from these disorders. Klonopin is the one of the most often used benzo's, however by no means the only one, the major benefit with this particular drug is that it forces GABA out of the brain, hence there is a neurotransmitter benefit. A drug like valium will work under 5mg per day, for more severe anxiety it requires a heavier dose and therefore it increases the likelyhood of depression. Ativan and and xanax are also very bad to get off especially in high doses. The whole group of SSRI's have psycological addiction components and rebound anxiety effects as well, again if you're on one of these and you have good results and have no other intolerances consider yourself lucky. I have suggested using L-tryptophan for depression, anxiety and sleep, it is a amino acid not a drug and is usually well tolerated if taken before bedtime with a light amount (2 ounces of a mildly sugared drink or small piece of fruit) so it crosses into the brain, not merely raise the serum blood level. From experience, I have used up to 8 grams a day with no ill effects. There are going to be alot of you out there questioning my opinion and rightfully so. I have used anxiety meds for the last 8 years and like alot of people find out you just get addicted and they no longer work resulting either in higher doses, switching to even a more powerful one or leaving the doctor's office with a handful of prescriptions to try. I manage my sleeplessness with diet and tryptophan and melatonin. While exercise is good, you have to watch it does not have the effect or raising certain cortisol levels and thereby raising your anxiety level. I also use a guided meditation for about 30 minutes twice a day.
