I have what I think is an interesting question. Is there any way to know how far along osteoarthritis of a person  might be, stage wise?

    • obeigle, I'm 50 and resently was diagnosed with Osteoarithritis and Fibromyalgia. I don't know about stages. I just know that is very painful. Both my problems started with me having back surgery in Oct. of last year. My hands have hurt me for years but got extremely more painful after surgery. My Rhuemetoligist said injuries and surgeries can trigger the arthritis. If you need someone to talk to just give me a shout. Gentle Hugs as Maggie would say. Welcome to the site. Check out the chat rooms. They help. Take care now. Sandy

    • Hi Carl.....welcome to disaboom. I also have osteoarthritis......just had a hip replacement.....10 days into the recovery process.......put I'd guess, maybe 30 % of my wieght on my rt. leg and down I went....turns out my femur broke in three places.....the ..recovery has been long....tiring { it's complicated by a spinal injury that left me paralized velow the waist }.......anyway in answer to your question.....other than a bone density test....I don't know of any more gauges to determine the extent of the osteoporsis.....the extent of mine was apparently a surprise to my own Dr, { surprise, surprise !}.....best of luck to you.....I know there are plenty of people on this sight that share your problem.....they may know more......again....welcome.....peace and love ....Norma

    •  As I too have developed osteoarthritis, resulting from injuries, I know the stages of discomfort, outright screaming pain, vary from day, to day, movement, from movement. X-rays, CT scans, MRI's, have always been my tracking method, along with the speed in which I move. I've slowed down quite a bit, but it took more then 17 years, since the initial injuries, before severe limitations began to have an impact. Maybe it was because I would not let it interfere, and would move in such a way to prevent aggravation. I often wonder if my now limited activity creates more discomfort, or not. Or even if my years of constant activity actually sped up the process. Who knows?
