In fact, most times, Adams, a lifelong resident of Mattituck, NY, has relished a good challenge. But finding a publisher/movie producer for his first novel, a romance adventure called 'Something More', is the ultimate test of his "can-do" spirit. Adams, 53, was born with a severed spinal cord. He is paralyzed from the waist down and has used a wheelchair his entire life. He has been a Vice President of Marketing in the banking world, and is sports journalist with the Times-Review Newspapers and Cablevision. He is also currently a Corp Rep for BJ’s Wholesale Club. His novel, the first of a planned series, is the fictional love story of Bobby Sanders and Kimberly Wells. “Bobby Sanders began life with a challenge,” Adams said. “Life took away his legs. But it couldn’t take away his drive and passion and heart. This is a story of hope and determination and faith and true love. A story of finding that something more in all of us. "Bobby, like myself, is in a wheelchair. He knows it's okay to be different, it's okay to dream, it's okay to want something more in life.” Bobby is an advertising executive in Manhattan. Kim, who lost both of her parents in a car accident when she was thirteen, is a producer at ESPN. She is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend, soon-to-be husband, Michael Johnson. Bobby and Kim meet on a cruise to St. Thomas in 1991, when they are both so desperately searching for something more in their own lives. They laugh and dance and play tennis and fall in love. But Kim still goes ahead with her wedding. Bobby is heartbroken. Across the next ten years, Bobby and Kim both endure great hardships, including the death of Kim's nine-year old son...until they find their way back to each other, three days after Bobby, sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden, uncovers an NBA betting scandal-the defining moment in his budding journalistic career. Unlike movies like 'Coming Home'/'Born on the Fourth of July', this isn't a story of readjusting. Bobby has a passion for life. 'Something More' is a celebration of living life to the fullest. "While there are many disabled characters in movies these days, I have tried to create a character that has a challenge, but who has real hopes and dreams," Adams said. "Bobby sits in the fourth row at 'Phantom of the Opera' on Broadway. He drives a 30-foot Sea Ray. He doesn't let the uncontrollable part of his body, control his life. 'Something More' is a cross between a younger, more athletic 'Ironside' and a love story like 'The Notebook' and 'Message In A Bottle'. Bobby Sanders is my Rocky Balboa." Adams has an agent in NYC-Jeff Feinman-but finding a publisher/movie producer for a "disabled" love story has been difficult, so far. "It takes a person of great insight to see this is a special story," Adams said. "Several publishers have said it 'doesn't fit into a slot.' While it has elements of the romance, inspirational and biographical categories, part of the power of 'Something More' is that it isn't one more of a genre. I would saw off my own legs in the middle of Times Square, if that's what it takes to get this story noticed...that's how much I believe in 'Something More'." Adams, who has launched a website BobbySanders.com, is looking for someone in the publishing/movie industry who will see the possibilities in this story. "It was heartwarming to see how our country embraced Christopher and Dana Reeve," Adams said. "They showed how love can overcome any obstacles. I believe the time is right for a story like this.
