In the UK the local council's run a scheme for elderly, disabled and vunerable people called Lifeline. I understand there is something similiar in USA.
Basically i have a system plugged into the mains and telephone line with a speaker and microphone on it. I then wear a button round my neck or on my wrist. If i was to have a fall i push the button and the system dial the LIFELINE number. I then get two way conversation and the operator should be able to hear me from wherever i am in the home. In addition i also got a pull cord in the bathroom in case i fall out the bath (and not wearing the button) to get assistance. The operator will chat and decide on any action that needs taking whether that me a key holder called or emergency services.
I decided to have this technology as i have had a recent fall. It was installed yesterday and i thought i would feel happy to have this and reassurred. Instead i feel down, like more of my independance has been taken away and that my flat is now full of gadgets. I guess in time i will get used to it.

Chris -
This is a good thing that you've done. I had the same system installed in my ex-mother-in-law's home, and this equipment REPEATEDLY was used, and quite possibly saved her life on couple of occasions, as she also was fiercly independent. On those occasions when she fell down and could not get up, help was on the way in minutes. Eventually, she came to appreciate having quick emergency help when it was needed...so, Chris, you and your family will be very glad that you installed this potentially life-saving equipment.
