GM--I, too, have PPS, having had polio at age 9. I am now 61. I have many things "wrong" with me, making for problems in my treatment plan. But, I have a powerchair which allows me to get out of the house with my hubby of almost 39 years. Thank you for listening, and I hope we can e-mail back and forth to try and help each other.
good to hear from you and to meet you. Wellcome you will find that most of us never knew the others were out there. A lot just don't get out. now thanks to sites like this we find each other.
Hi Cladio, My name is Dave i had polio in 58 a year old i was, anyway's you said something about having a leg brace , im in the San Jose , calif area & was wondering if you know of a place around here i can go to get one, there use to be a place called Hittenberger's but im not sure if they still make those, Or if you know of a place on line. i could check. Ive been having trouble now & think i need a brace again, im not sure what kind of doctor im supposed to see, since my Ortho doctor is retired & most doctor's nowaday's don't seem to know about Polio. I think im getting Post Polio but am not sure, i can hardley walk a couple of blocks anymore. My wife keeps asking me whats wrong, but im not even sure.
anyway's would appreciate any help.
Doc
do you happen to know what kind of doctor that i might go to that can diagnose whether i have Post Polio or not ?Ive asked an orthopedic doctor but he didn't really know much about it. I had polio when i was a year old in my right leg in 1958 , i threw away my leg braces because at the time i could handle walking without them, first i had a metal brace then i had a plastic one. But i saw a note on this web site of one of the guys here saying he was out of breath walking only a block, well i am getting the same way, So if you know of a place here in the bay area i could go please let me know ?
HI Davcan,
My name is Nonniebee and I was the person who started this topic back in Nov 2007. I read your post and I thought I would reply. I contracted polio in 1958 at the age of 6. I was diagnosed with PPS in 2004 at the age of 51. I live in Montana which is a very rural state so to find a post polio specialist, I had to travel 5 hours to Billings, MT. My doctor is the ONLY doctor in the whole state that treats PPS. Although my PPS is full blown and my symptoms are pretty bad right now, I keep trying to educate myself about the effects of PPS.
You asked what kind of specialist you should see. The best bet is a neurologist that does EMG studies. Below is a link to the directory of doctors and clinics in your area.....

This site is also a great for info relating to PPS.
Thanks Nonniebee, for the info , before i had nothing to go on, now i have something i appreciate it.
