    • Is there anyone who is interested in learning to sign or practice signing?  Though I am not fluent, I would love more practice and the opportunity to sign with someone using American Sign Language, Signing Exact English, or Pidgin Sign.  If you are not adept, please do not be intimidated---I simply need and want to practice.  If you know someone who'd want to, you would want to, or know of a place to sign, please let me know.  (At the risk of sounding pathetic), I have a webcam and would love to utilize it.  Thanks!!!

    • Wish I could-that sounds like fun! When I got this computer though (with Vista) it made my webcam noncompatible so for now I'm webcamless...hope others jump on this opportunity though and if I ever get another one I'll let you know.

    • I'd be interested in this. I am losing my hearing due to MELAS and am learning ASL. I use Fant's  phrase book, Tennant's handshape dictionary and various other books as well as several sign language websites and forums. For Disaboom, I forget if there was a Deaf Culture section?

Lots of possibilities so keep me posted on anything you might do in the future. Smile

LOL, actually, I would expect more to be around in a forum like this. Is there a specific section for Deafies? Over the past year, I have learned a lot about the Deaf culture but my MELAS disorder is causing me great obstacles in learning to sign. I actually blogged about that issue last February 20th as you can read here: http://blogs.datm.org/?p=29

LOL, I had forgotten all about that blog.

Suggestion... Let's kick the discussion around for a while and see if we can pull anybody else out of the woodwork. I also tried to chane the title to:

"Re: Anyone Interested in ASL (Learning to Sign)"

thinking that might get more "reads" on this topic. Folks will sometimes not bother opening a thread if the title does not catch their eye.

Soooooooooo... for discussion, what is your background with ASL and are you learning ASL, SEE, PSL, etc. Big difference in all of them; particularly grammar. A person's typed messages will lots of times reveal if they are part of the Deaf culture or not. As you can see, I'm not.

The is one thing that I can do that I could not do as a Hearie; at a Deaf Chat Coffee a while back, we all went to a local restaurant for lunch. With the TVs blaring a game, people screaming for their team, etc.; we were still able to hold a conversation from one end of the table to the other! LOL

I'm no interpreter and can barely sign "good to see you again" but I am learning. Takes time and my biggest handicap is not being around signers but once a month; if even that.

Soooooooooo... What's your background and experience. You brought up the question. Wink

      Dave

    • Haha ohh yeah that's funny you started a blog last year.

Thanks, I'll try and change the title, whatever will better catch people's eye.

My dad is deaf/HOH, though I didn't learn sign because of him but rather because he doesn't.  I have been signing for a LOOONNNG time.  I have a few Deaf/HOH friends that I've signed with in the past, though don't currently have anyone to sign with now.  I have taken ASL II, but my vocab is beyond that and my grammar may be at that level.  And yeah, I know the difference between ASL/SEE/PSL, but wanted to make this as available/accessible to all, so to not limit anyone who would be interested in practicing. :)

Yeah I hope to go to a Deaf Coffee Chat in Seattle soon.  Haha, I love the chance to practice with others and hearing these kinds of stories!  ;)

Good luck to all in your efforts to learn some ASL, please let me know if I can be of any assistance.  I wouldn't mind setting up a way for people to practice sign if people let me know a good method, medium, and time.  :D Ohhhh this makes me happy that others want to practice or learn!!!  *deaf applause*

    • It looks like you've already gotten someone to help; but I would be willing to help if there is anyway I can. I could not even be considered a novice at the least - but I have interest, and motives (for learning) which would be long and nearly impossible to explain.

I am related to someone who knows ASL completely fluently and have tried to learn as well - but haven't had any way to practice it as well.

    • Well, there does seem to be some interest here. After the first of the year when things slow down a tad, I'd like to explore this further. For now, it'll take every ounce of enegy that I have to get through to January 2nd, 2008. LOL

I find these websites very handy to learn from:

      http://www.aslpro.com/

      http://www.lifeprint.com/

      Some discussion forums:

      http://www.alldeaf.com/

      http://www.tagdeaf.com/

Practicing signing online with another signer:

      http://www.skype.com

Practicing signing in person while sipping Starbucks coffee:

      http://www.deafcoffee.com/

And finally, for that touch of humor:

I hope you all find some useful information above.

    • A visual method (webcam), is all that I can think of using right now...I suppose if you wanted to make a more curricular experience out of it, you could use a still camera to make 'digital flashcards' so to speak.

    • Hi, I was half-way thru an ASL interpreter program b4 I left to help my mother who became very ill in another state.  I've forgotten alot, but need to get back in it.  I'll have to get a webcam for this little laptop tho.  I'll check back with you all on this.
