Hello everyone...I had a stroke in March of 2006. I'm about as fine as I can be right now. I can walk, talk and move my arm around fairly well. I've actually been pretty lucky though. I've been going to the gym 4-5 times a week, which is something I NEVER did before. I've also lost 100 pounds since my trip to the hospital. Other than that though, I am still unemployed still, for better or worse. What I'd like everyone's opinions ie what do you think my odds of having a second stroke are? Do they increade over time? Are they less? Any opinion will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You know what LoneWolf and lilmufn, I wonder the same thing. I stroked in November of last year at the age of 33 and was extremely lucky my neurosurgeon told me that next time I won't be so lucky. They say that once you've had a stroke you're 9 times more likely to have another but that is compared to people who've never had one, which doesn't say much. They think it was caused by high blood pressure which runs in my Dad's side of the family. I do think about it sometimes though because although we have health problems that run in the family, no one on either side of my family has ever had a stroke. So I wonder about that too.
years of high blood pressure or high cholestrol may have caused damage to blood vessels that lifestyle changes can not completely reverse but we can't change the past we can only strive to conrol risk factors going forward and take whatever medicines our doctors prescribe to lessen the chances od developing lblood clots or bleeds. the more we're able to manage our risk factors and the more years that pass since our strokes the less we'll worry about having another event.
i'm 10 years post stroke and no longer worry about another event. i take my prescribed meds, eat healthy exercise regularly and go on with my life.
What can I say. Definitely change your lifestyle from before and you'll lesson the chance. Not to get too 'airy' here, but to visualize where you really want to go helps. You might want to look at some of the recordings that my company has for people that have experienced a stroke. It's specific for certain areas or deficits that one might encounter after a stroke. Hope you are at least volunteering. I had one of my patients start volunteering at the local elementary reading to children that were behind, really helped put any of their disabilities on both sides...a better perspective. Good Luck! www.independentachievement.com

65 is just not that old these days, and you should be able to enjoy many more years of healthy, active life.
I wish you the very best; keep in touch.

sorry, to interupt, but I had a massive stroke in 07 and had no risk factors. My response is keep your heart right with GOD,and leave it in his hands.
Hi: I'm mike. II'm 59 now and recovering from a massive stroke. I had not one risk factor, but like you I'd like to see the next one coming.
Hi Grandma10! Welcome to Disaboom...I'm glad to see you've already received some support...I've never had a stroke but I can imagine that it would be extremely difficult to have so many in such a short period of time. I hope you are on the mend and if it helps to come in here and relax, vent, or just meet some new friends-please come back and join us! If you need any help or have questions, just let me know.
Lonewolf and Grandma10 welcome. You don't have to be alone here. Lots of people are willing to give their experiences and advice. Lonewolf congrats on getting into shape and losing all that weight. That's fantastic. I would think being in shape now would help greatly against another one. However, I've never had a stroke, and I don't know any one whose ever had one. Being in shape and healthy over all helps a lot even when it comes to a general cold etc. Instead of just sitting at home you decided to give it your all and get into shape. I'm sure you feel better all around too. Best of luck to you and I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Grandma10 hang in there! Best of Luck.
Grandma: please check your PMs.
