    • Your weight loss will definitely contribute to a lengthy healthy lifestyle - that goes without saying. I believe those predisposed with high blood pressure, like those predisposed to cancer will always have higher chances for a reoccurance of a stoke or TIA. I bet there a study thats already been done and would be surprised if it hadn't. As for TIA's - when I was at the ER for my stroke event, the doctor said he tell by CAT scan that I had several small TIA's by, at some points in the past - I'm guessing the scar shadows. I really couldn't see them even though he pointed them out to my sister & I. The CAT scan just looked like a glorified x-ray. It wasn't until the MRI - which distinctly showed the vessels in my head. that I could actually see what the medical professionals were talking about to me about, I didn't figure this out till the speech therapist said she could tell I going to need help by where my stroke happened. I suppose it's something the medical people figured out on a "need to know " basis. Does anyone really know who's going to have a TIA or major stroke episode and what age, time of day or when it will occur. I'd have to agree with the others - it's in God's hand or there's something the medical people won't tell us. I myself lean toward's it being in God's hand.

I know it's in God's hands. My hemorrhage on January 1, 2001, was so severe that several competent doctors at a large well-respected hospital in Dallas concurred that I could not possibly survive it, and even if I did, I would likely remain in a "vegetative" state.
Seven years later, I'm still going strong, and the cause of my stroke(high blood pressure) is under control.

We can only control so much. We're just the clay; the rest is up to the Potter, and worrying doesn't change a thing.

    • I very much hope this will be encouraging to those of you anxious about your odds of having a second( or third, or ...) stroke:
I saw my doctor yesterday for my routine three-month checkup, and my blood pressure was 128/72. Now, this is with medication, but still ..
I asked my doctor point-blank, "Since I've had one [hemorrhagic] stroke, am I at increased risk for another?"
He replied. "Yes. But high blood pressure is what caused your stroke, and it's under control, so we just need to be sure to keep a close eye on that."
      He didn't seem alarmed.

    • I had my first stroke in 2000,along with 3 TIAs ( at least thats what the Drs said) my strokes were caused by Varacella virus ( chicken pox on the inside).I was paralyzed on my right side and slowly regained my hand & leg. I relearned how to walk and walk with a cane. I had another stroke ( July 07) and went thru everything again. I am still weak on the right side and have no energy or desire to do anything. I have gained weight ( 35 lbs) so I won't fit in my jeans. Drs can't tell me why I had my last stroke. They can only guess. Good luck.

    • I know it doesn't help but from what I read and can tell. We all seem to be predisposed - odds are who really knows. I'm sure your choosing to living, weightloss, eating and exercising will only lengthen you healthly lifestyle. My issue is my family history with high blood pressue. So stay on your med's and do what your doing. I too am umemployed - well retired, by choice. We have nothing but time literally - stay well, healthy and most of all enjoy the time you have now. Sleep all day and get up whenever you want to but take the rest of the day to work on getting you recovered, healthy and happy. Why worry about the "next" one or your odds of having another - just get yourself well and happy first ! The future is not that grim and there's alot to be grateful for - really.
