    • I have a handicap called Arthrogryposis, because of it my hands/arms are barely functional. I wass wondering if I could replace them with prosthetics? Here's a pic of me: http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa234/synbios459/MISC/SUNP0054.jpg

      I'm 22 btw.

    • Hi Azurehth,

      welcome to disaboom.

I'm certain Your hands are a great challenge to You. But You may want to take into consideration tht today's prosthetic hands are barely functioning, too. The technology to move the digits separately and individually is still in its infancy.

And even if You get one of todays finer prosthetics, that are moved by transmitters on your nerve's ends, You would have to go through a lot of schooling to learn to use it.

Most likely You will be fixed up with a simple mechanic hand, that doesn't work any better than Your own.

And what's more important: a prosthetic hand has no sensation!

But I'm no hand amputee. Maybe somebody who is can tell You more about how prosthetic hands work really.

I wish You all the best.

      Daisies

    • Hi I too have Arthrorgyposis and my arms/ hands look extremely familiar to yours but thanks to some decently minor surgeries I have a lot of function. I am extremely active in the Arthrogryposis community and know that a great hand surgeon experienced with Arthrogryposis patients could make your hands more functional, but my no means normal. I assume and I could be wrong that you have no active flexion in your elbows, meaning you cannot without leaning on something bring your hand to your mouth and above your head? I was born with my elbows unable to bend and no biceps. I have the type of Arthrogryposis known as Amyoplasia. In order to give me the ability to feed myself and do personal care on my face and head my hand surgeon transferred my pectoralis major muscle that lays in your chest wall into where my bicep should have been. Thanks to this surgery by right arm has active flexion. I can feed myself 100% independenlty and have extremely good function, despite the fact my hands are clubbed, elbows in permanet flexion and less then 30% of the muscle that should be there. As far as your question goes, I doubt a prosectic hand or arm would be of much use, especially if you lack the muscle necessary in your shoulders to be able to move it.
