    • I met someone new today and as she shook my hand I winced and yelped. I always forget that I can't do that anymore. But really, what do you say? "I'm sorry I can't shake hands, I have arthritis," sounds so clunky. What do you say?

    • Make eye contact and just nod.

Place your hand gently upon their's after they extend it.

Try not to forget it hurts for you!Wink

Can you believe I've tried that, and it didn't work?? Some people are seriously aggressive about their hand shakes! Wink

    • I do one of two things.  If it's someone that I need to establish a rapport with and they extend their hand, I take theirs in both of mine, briefly and gently squeeze then release it saying, "I have arthritis in my hands so handshakes are a tad difficult, but I'm so pleased to meet you!"

If it's not someone I need to establish a rapport with, then I just smile and say "I'm unable to shake hands, thank you though".

It's okay to just tell people that you don't shake hands with anyone (be sure to include the anyone so they don;' think it's just them).  Even if I'm having a 'good' day, I try to avoid germ spreading so limit my physical contact with people outside my family.

    • That's a lovely suggestion!
