    • Hi there,

I've had about 20 strokes and continue to have them. Coping... eh... I write about it, I keep working, I just hope for the best. I wish I had some magic bullet advice, but I am really just living day to day.

The one thing I have found helpful is the acceptance of what I am now and what I can hope for. It does help!

      Liesl

    • Hi John and everyone

I am new to this site.  I also had a stroke in 2001 that affected my left side, mostly caused by stress and diabetes.

I was in physical therapy for 4 months, and recovered the use of my left arm & hand, but I still have to wear a brace on my left leg.  I went back to work after 6 mos, and have returned to work full time.  I am thankful for all I have and do  not take anything for granted.

The biggest thing that took me time to adjust was how some of the people closest to me, BF and so  called friends, dropped me like a hot potato.  That hurt more than than anything....but life goes on, and so have I.  I have made new friends, and my family was the greatest through all of this.

Glad to be here with people that can relate.

      Welcome, Tejaswoman!

First, I want to congratulate you on your remarkable recovery.
I had my stroke in 2001, and I still can't do much with my left side.
As for your "friends" scattering, please realize that it is not your fault that they couldn't handle the situation.

Unfortunately, some people are just like that. They weren't right for you, or they would have sayed by you.

I'm glad your family has been supportive. That's not the case with all families.

I wish you the very best.

      Carla N.

    • New here too. My stroke was related to my predisposition of high blood pressure (family history on my dad's side) and the effects were on the right side. Couldn't walk, write, type or talk without slurring had to literally learn how wipe all over again. Yes there are worse off and younger than I but you cope and get through it. I speak from real experience. There are many who've been through your exact experince - though it may one one side or another, more severe than others - you can be safe in the knowledge that you aren't the first to experience a TIA or major stroke. I've been there and can certainly relate to many of same events you have gone through and some not.

We are here and we are many ! We all came to this site and place because that commonality didn't we ? Pick any topic that interests you - someone or something will come up ... hopefully one of us will be able to help or experience the same thing you've been through - that's why I came here and glad I did too.

    • You really find out how your freinds are after something like a stroke.  Tejaswoman, I assume you're in Texas? Hehehe, I live in the armpit of Texas myself. John, the one who started this thread, I lost  track somewhere, I am so happy you found the  strength to start working again. I've wanted to for  a while, but something always happens. But the last 'thing' that happened is that I became  a mommy and I don't mind that at  all.  How I found this thread  is searching 'stroke depression' which I'm having a bout of now. I became depressed every now and then pre-stroke, but the wolf has been growling at my door for a few months now (comes from some analogy another stroke survivor made in a yahoo group I belonged to). I have a few things in my life I'm very unhappy about at the moment, it's time for some change.

Tejaswoman, I'm sure you've heard this before,  but  those freinds  that  dropped  you did it because they couldn't handle   change very  well. It was their problem, not yours. You didn't choose to have a stroke, but they chose to quit calling. When my life drastically  changed, I was living with a boyfreind for close to a year, I was ready to hear a proposal soon, but he left very soon after my stroke. So I guess it was a sign that he wasn't a commitment kind of guy and saved me a lawyer's fee eventually.

Ok, excuse the rambling everybody. But hey, maybe if I ramble more on here I can get out my morose and cheer up! Hehehe... oh well, I hope everybody has a good day.

Liesl~ Haha I had it right when I was wondering how to say your name- I was to shy to ask. Cause if something confuses or stumps me I won't leave it alone till I find the answer.

    • Thanks for your message toriam.  Sounds like we both encountered similar situations after our strokes.  Your boyfriend didn't deserve you as mine also.

Not a consolation, but my former BF started calling and emailing me around 4 years after, just to see how I was doing.  I forgave him as a friend, but not as a BF.  He admitted he did not do the right thing when he left, dumped me with an e-mail....but it's his loss not mine.

Life goes on toriam, and you sound like a great person with a great attitude.

So what is the armpit of Texas?  I live in SA.  Hope its not that.... Wink
