Hi,
My father lost his leg in 1994, due to bone cancer. I am looking for help with paying for to get him a new one. He is disabled, and does not work. His insurance will pay 80% and the rest will come out of pocket. Is there any group that will help with payment. We live in Ohio. Any help will be appreciatted.
Thank you
Tammy
Hey Tammy, sorry to hear about your dad. I'm a right BKA and hope I can help here.
Is he a vet? Maybe his local AMVETS or VFW could help. Also, if you have a local cancer society, they might be able to give him some money. Check with your nearest American Cancer Society office.
You could also check to see if there is a cancer organization in your state, or even nationally. Like, if he had osteosarcoma, check with the national or state chapter for that. I had lymphoma and I have gotten help from the Children's Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Michigan. They help child and adult patients with any kind of blood cancer.
Lastly, there's nothing like a good old fashioned spaghetti feed to raise money. That's what we do up here in my neck of the woods. They sell tickets, have a 50/50 raffle and sometimes even have a band, to help someone undergoing cancer treatment or other situations. My son's eighth grade baseketball team had a special basketball game for me and gave my family and I all the proceeds. It was a very special time for me and I will never forget it. Each of the basketball players, even from the opposing team, came up to me and gave me a rose. I was so touched.
Oh, also check with his prosthetist to see if he has any suggestions. Also, I belong to the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA). They put out a magazine called, 'In Motion.' There is a petition there that your dad can sign so we can all get our prosthetics paid for fairly. The web site is at the bottom of my post here. Maybe they would have more suggestions too? He can sign up for the magazine too, it's bimonthly and it's free! It has a lot of good articles in it. We need prosthetic parity in this country, badly.
I'm lucky, my insurance pays very well. However, my husband's union contract expires this August and I'm hoping we don't lose any benefits. I am hoping that the ACA can help get our prosthetics paid for in a fair and equitable manner.
Good luck to you and your dad.
