    • I've always worried about the prospect of using a Hoyer lift or similar because of my chronic pain, but I'm going to need one soon.  The older I get, the more my bones and muscles struggle to hold some of my weight (stand-pivot or similar with PCA).  I'm hoping to hear good things and maybe learn which lifts are worth looking at.

      Thanks!

      J

    • I am not sure I understand what you are intending to use it for.

My wife uses a (manual) Hoyer to pick me off the floor and put me in my wheelchair (when I fall down during a transfer).  It is a fairly big contraption that we manage to store in a closet.  (It fills the closet.)

How/when are you going to use it?

    • Right now my parents are my attendants, and they are getting to a point where they can't lift me to/from the bathroom/shower/whatever else.  I'm hoping to get ideas of personal lifts, whether Hoyer or similar, that are good for moderate use.

    • Since I am not totally familiar with your situation, I can only offer some general ideas--I hope I do not offend you when my ideas are so far off the mark that you find them ridiculous.  Feel free to contact me by private message; I am willing to help in any way I can.

I bought my Hoyer from Spinlife.com.  I know they have slings with a hole cut in the bottom so that the patient can be lowered directly onto the toilet.  Since the floorplan of your bathroom may not allow a ('big') Hoyer to wheel up to the toilet in the right position, you might have to consider a 'portable' freestanding toilet.

I noticed Spinlife also has lifts for the bathtub.  And I am also pretty sure that there are (waterproof?) slings for use in the tub, pool, etc.

Another possibility is renovating the shower to accommodate a wheelchair.  (Use the Hoyer to get into a wheelchair, then wheel into the shower.)

A couple of things to consider:  where are you going to put it when not in use?  how wide are your doorways (different doorways are different widths, so you should measure them all)?

Are my comments helpful? Or, am I going the wrong direction?

    • Every comment is helpful.  I think it's probably best to get a wheeled shower chair, one that is more like a manual chair (I've seen these only once before), and a Hoyer.  Thatnks for the suggestions and things I need to consider.
