    • i work in an adult home and one of the residents is blind !  he has no idea where to meet other blind people and he's very lonely.  unfortunately he was over protected by his family so he has no idea how to do anything on his own!  he's almost sixty years old and he's so sweet.  i'm looking for some kind of social events in the long island area in new york so he can find someone to share his life with  or just to have a good time with.  please help, somebody!

      thanks,

      kikidz

    • In my own there is the community center where seniors(people 60 and over) get together for lunch.  The community puts on the lunch for about $3.  And the local health club has discount rates for seniors.  There might be some in your area.

    • Cool i too worked in an   retired nursing home. i found cd books in the library and we pulled up a circle of chairs every night and played a chapter. he does not just need to meet blind people a seeing person can be just as good a friend.  i am sure there are foundations for the blind that you can contact and get him interested in life again. good luck and thank you for taking care of our seniors.

    • Hi Kikidz!

Welcome to Disaboom! You've found a great place to hopefully hook your friend up with some resources that would benefit him but I do have one piece of advice.......even the title of this post "my poor blind friend" gives me the feeling that you pity this man. I know it may be difficult because you are a first hand witness to the challenges he's facing right now-but pity is definitely NOT what he needs and until you change that attitude I worry that you won't really find him meaningful social avenues to explore either. He needs someone to see him as an equal and someone with very much left to contribute to society--I'm sure he's much more than a charity case and I just want to make sure that you convey that in both your intentional and unintentional messages.

      Good luck in your search!

      ~Kara
