Changes in Policies for People with Disabilities
For years, Disaboom, has kept ears to the ground to bring
news that effects people with disabilities, while some news has been
encouraging, other news, not so much. At the same time we have reached out to our
social media community via disaboomlive, facebook, linkedIn and Twitter for
feedback from people with disabilities and those who care and support them.
What we have found is many times good news is received with a “wait and see”
attitude, which we attribute to too many promises unfulfilled by government and
society. We understand.
But over the past year, there appears to be a new wind
blowing across America and beyond. We have interviewed those in decision-making
positions in the United States government from Kareem Dale, Special Assistant
to the President for Disability Policy, Georgia Coffey, VA Assistant Secretary
for Diversity and Inclusion and recently, Kathy Martinez, Department of Labor,
Office of Disability Employment Policy. They are providing policy-changing
opinions and insights that are being put into action.
In the business sector, Disaboom has reached out to key
players who are making a difference in Corporate America; companies who are
seeking to be inclusive and add diversity to their corporate structure. Many
have posted job openings on Disaboomjobs and others are setting goals for
inclusion.
In the private sector, we have interviewed people with
disabilities who have found jobs and or created jobs with their entrepreneurial
spirit. These are people who have
overcome great obstacles and they are telling us that yes, it is becoming much
easier to navigate through life and careers. In our interview with Tamara Mena,
she gives solid advice on Ticket to Work along with tips for
interviews.
As we add new articles and interviews we will include them
in our “Change is Coming” series. We are
encouraged, and we invite you to share with us stories of your experiences as
you embrace positive changes in your life.
