I was a "normal" person until December 1, 2004, when I went into a diabetic coma, partly the result of gas gangrene in my right leg. I awoke in the ICU with an above-knee amputation, diabetic retinopathy that has left me legally blind, and diabetic neuropathy that has made it necessary to wear an orthosis on my left leg and affected the sensitivity of my hands. Because it has been nearly impossible to find employment, I have begun my own business as a Virtual Assistant. I also write poetry as a hobby - faith-based poetry for my church's newsletter and frivolous doggerel for fun. Oh, yes - I have a prosthesis and am going through gait training.
