I have been around disabilities my whole life. My mom has retinitis pigmentosa, which, in her case manifested itself by taking her sight slowly and severe hearing loss. She couldn't see at night and has had to be led all my life. I've been her guide since I was about 7. I just turned 46, so that's almost 4 decades. My husband is also legally blind, but gets about way way better than I do. I am officially disabled, due to...well, you name it and I've got it. (more or less) I started out using a cane. (OMG! How humiliating!) Yes, I was self-conscious over the "stick" as it's affectionately known. Well, when I had to admit I needed a walker, you can just guess how fun THAT was. lol Now I have a rollater-type walker with a basket and a seat. It's candy apple red and I tell everyone it's my "hot wheels". :D However, use of the hot wheels is a lot less these days. Now it's a wheelchair (holy road rage Batman!) and I'm not strong enough to wheel myself, so my sweet, legally blind hubby pushes me all over. Fibromyalgia, severe roto-scoliosis, diabetes, heart problems, narrow angle glaucoma, obesity, low thyroid AND a 12 year-old (who thinks he's 35) with ADHD. No complaints here! I am happy and very blessed. I am always looking for info about my family's health issues and I hope to find lots of answers here.
