How I’m involved with Disaboom: My grandma was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) when I was ten years old. MS didn’t mean anything to me back then. We didn’t talk about MS at home. And we didn’t talk about it around my grandma when my sister and I visited her every summer.
My grandma was one of 20 women in her college to become a certified physical therapist. She was a revolutionary in those days. During her career, she worked with patients who lived with MS. She taught my sister and me how to properly stretch before walking in the morning.
As I grew older, the symptoms of MS became more apparent to me. My grandma depended on a cane to help her walk rather than relying on stretches she taught me years before. Even though MS peeped through my grandma’s moves, I still didn’t understand how MS truly affected my family. How could I? We didn’t talk about it.
It wasn’t until I started working at The Heuga Center for Multiple Sclerosis, a health and wellness nonprofit based in Edwards, Colo., that I understood why I felt angry, confused, sad and hopeful about MS. My grandma isn’t alone. My family isn’t alone. And I’m not alone.
I believe that by contributing to Disaboom’s community through my articles and online conversations, I’ll help people like my grandma develop a nurturing community that helps empower them to live healthy lives. This is one of the ways of being the change I wish to see in the world.
