I have turned my circumstances into a plus instead of a negative. I can understand where people are coming from and know that I have touched many people’s lives just by smiling and showing that I'm not handicap or disabled just a little more challenged then most and not as much as others. Optimism, determination and caring about others are very contagious. OK let's get the disability out of the way first. It’s not who I am its where I have traveled, the journey I've been on and where I'm headed. I had a spinal injury in 1981 and have been fighting it ever since. I've had 3 spinal surgeries and the last one 2003 I actually could walk again. It was an experimental surgery done in MPLS, MN. And no one (even the dr. could believe I was walking in 3 weeks after being in the chair for over 5 years.) I didn't walk long I ran. I've always been very adventures, multi-tasking person. I started a new career and was doing GREAT for a year and 1/2 but then the weakness came back and I'm in the wheelchair again with no more options. I have 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. I was in the computer business almost from the beginning 1958 and my husband was a project manager and consultant until 1998 when he had his first stroke. But you know I have really learned that when a door shuts a window opens. If John had not been home I would not have had someone to care for me when I got worse. He has been taking care of me for 10 years now. (Don’t tell him, but I’ve been taking care of him too.) We have been married 43 years. Now we have just taken on the challenged of caring for my 91 year old mother with Parkinson/dementia. I’ve started a new business from home and of course the counseling to all my family. I also really like researching genealogy and quilting. Otherwise I have nothing to do. I’m a work in progress trying to learn how to pacing myself and how to except help from others.
