I am a Professional Realtor and Certified Seniors Real Estate Specialist here in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. I have been a passionate crusader for barrier-free living in the Northwest for more than 4 years now, and President of ABLE Environments, LLC. ABLE Environments provides a specialized perspective in the real estate industry towards finding homes that are, or can readily be adapted to support barrier-free living. It is unfortunate that the industry as a whole has a very poor understanding and appreciation for what that truly means. I have also been member of the Northwest Universal Design Council in Seattle almost from its inception. The Northwest UD Council is a consortium of Government, Education, Non-profit and Private industry. Our objective is wholesale education to the public about the benefits (and transparency) of barrier-free living, supporting housing options in response to every stage in a person’s lifecycle, and promotion of the principles of Universal Design into the mainstream homebuilding and remodeling industry. ABLE Environments and the Northwest UD Council have had numerous success stories here in the Northwest, and I am personally very excited to be a part of truly unique development project, which will create a living lab of 8-10 homes in a totally barrier-free and sustainable community.
