Muscle and coordination problems are a major issue with people who have cerebral palsy. Wheelchairs help to remedy the mobility problems that many with cerebral palsy (CP) have. Whether you or your loved one needs a wheelchair depends on the severity of the cerebral palsy. Wheelchairs can be a necessity for some with CP, while others with cerebral palsy might use other mobility technology to improve maneuverability.

Cerebral Palsy Wheelchair: Manual vs. Motorized
Wheelchairs used for cerebral palsy can typically be categorized into two types, manual and motorized. Manual wheelchairs require the use of your hands and arms to move the wheels. For many people with cerebral palsy, wheelchairs that are manual are the first choice, because the user gets a physical benefit from the exercise required to push the chair.

However, due to the large and small motor problems cerebral palsy causes in patients, propelling a manual wheelchair isn’t always a reasonable option. Motorized wheelchairs allow someone without the ability to use a manual wheelchair to still easily be able to move around. Motorized wheelchairs function by using a joystick or some other mechanism to control the wheelchair.

Cerebral Palsy Wheelchair Variables
You should consult with medical professionals, such as a doctor and physical therapist, when trying to obtain a wheelchair for an individual with cerebral palsy. Wheelchairs vary greatly, leaving medical professionals to evaluate several different factors when determining an appropriate wheelchair for you or your loved one. These factors include posture control, whether or not a motorized wheelchair is needed, and what additional assistive technologies the person may use.

Wheelchair Maintenance
Overall, wheelchairs should be versatile. Wheelchairs for people with cerebral palsy need to be to able to function in school, work, and home environments. An important part of keeping a cerebral palsy wheelchair functioning at its best includes cleaning and maintenance. This may require assistance for somebody with cerebral palsy. Wheelchairs should be cleaned at least once a week.

CP Mobility Technology
In addition to wheelchairs, other mobility technology, including canes and walkers, can be helpful for individuals with CP. These forms of mobility technology prove beneficial for cerebral palsy persons who can walk but have poor balance. Determining the right mobility technology for you or your loved one will involve consulting with your healthcare professionals.
