A type of chronic muscle pain, myofascial pain (also known as myofascial syndrome and myofascial pain syndrome) is a condition that affects your muscles’ “trigger points,” which then may spread the pain throughout other muscles in your body.

Myofascial pain differs from ordinary, occasional muscle pain in that it continues or worsens, rather than gradually improving. Although myofascial treatment options vary for each person’s specific pain profile, physical therapy, trigger point injections, medications, and therapeutic massage are usually considered. Common risk factors for myofascial pain include injury to a muscle, being inactive, stress and anxiety, getting older (myofascial pain occurs most often in those middle-age or older), and being female.
