Service Animals

Service animals are any animal that has been trained to assist you in your activities of daily living. Most often this will be a service dog, also called a guide dog or seeing eye dog. But there are also service monkeys, service birds, and even service donkeys. Check with the organizations to find the information you need to make a good service animal choice.

Assistance Dogs International, Inc.

ADI is a coalition for nonprofit organizations that train assistance dogs. ADI's mission is to better all steps of the process, from training to utilization of service dogs to public education about assistance dogs.

Canine Companions for Independence

Canine Companions for Independence is the largest nonprofit provider of assistance dogs. CCI's mission is to improve the lives of people with disabilities with well-trained assistance dogs.

Delta Society

Delta Society's mission is to better human health through service animals and therapy. The Delta Society also attempts to promote awareness of the positive effects animals can have on peoples' health.

Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation

The Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation is based in Bloomfield, Connecticut and is New England’s only guide dog school. With clients in 34 states and four Canadian provinces, Fidelco relies solely on the gifts and the generosity of individuals, foundations, corporations and organizations that partner with Fidelco to “Share the Vision.”

Freedom Service Dogs

Freedom Service Dogs, located in Colorado, rescues dogs from shelters for the purpose of training them to be service animals. Dogs are custom-trained.

Guide Dogs for the Blind

Guide Dogs for the Blind's mission is to provide improved mobility for blind/visually impaired individuals through partnerships with service dogs.

Guide Horse Foundation

Guide horses provide an alternative type of service animal for the blind/visually impaired who may be allergic to dogs or want a service animal with a longer lifespan. The Guide Horse Foundation is dedicated to providing the blind/visually impaired with guide horses at no cost. Handlers are even provided with on-site training with their guide horse.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands provides an additional option for those searching for service animals: Monkey helpers. Helping Hands trains capuchin monkeys to assist quadriplegics and others with severe SCI injuries or mobility impairments.

International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants

IAABC is a professional association for animal behavior consulting. IAABC's website has a specific section for "working animals" such as service and therapy animals.

International Association of Assistance Dog Partners

IAADP is a non-proft which represent all people with hearing, guide, and service animals.
